Jewish "exceptionalism" to assimilation is a persistent theme in Zionist writings. Herzl insisted that Jews can never be assimilated. One of the indicators, and the tools, for the success of the Zinoist project for him was the European anti-semitism. He said that European leaders will help the Zionist project because they don't want Jews in Europe. Anti-semitism was and continues to be a necessary part of the survival kit of Zionism.
